Minnesota State Wrestling to Compete at NCAA Super Region V Championships

MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 25 Minnesota State wrestling team (15-4, 8-2 NSIC) will compete at the NCAA Super Region V Championships on Saturday, February 28, at R/A Facility in Marshall, Minnesota. Southwest Minnesota State will host the event, with matches beginning at 10 a.m. CT.

Participating Teams

The tournament will feature a competitive field including No. 7 Augustana, No. 9 St. Cloud State, No. 14 UMary, MSU Moorhead, Minot State, Northern State, Southwest Minnesota State, Upper Iowa, No. 6 Wisconsin-Parkside, and Sioux Falls .

Last Year’s Performance

Last season, the Mavericks finished fifth at the NCAA Super Region V Championships held at Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Seven MSU wrestlers placed at the tournament, with three – Colton Hush, Drake Hayward, and Caleb Meunier – advancing to the NCAA DII Championships. The team ultimately achieved a 17th-place national finish.

Maverick Wrestlers to Watch

The Maverick roster boasts four wrestlers ranked in NCAA Division II:

  • Chase Beckett (No. 25 at 133 pounds): Holds a 26-8 overall record (15-4 in duals) with six wins by fall and five major decisions.
  • Walker Bents (No. 13 at 149 pounds): Is 23-5 overall (15-4 in duals) with three wins by fall, five by tech fall, and six by major decision.
  • Caleb Meunier (No. 8 at 157 pounds): Leads the team with 15 wins by fall and has a 26-5 overall record (15-4 in duals).
  • Drake Hayward (No. 13 at 174 pounds): Maintains a consistent performance with a 26-6 overall record (15-4 in duals) and nine wins by fall.

Recent Results

The Mavericks concluded their regular season with a dominant 46-0 shutout victory over Southwest Minnesota State on February 12. MSU secured wins in all 10 matches, including two by fall, four by tech fall, and two by major decision. Caleb Meunier and Kole Marko each earned pins during the dual .

Makovsky’s Retirement

The team honored its seniors before the February 12th match, and also recognized head coach Jim Makovsky following the match. Makovsky announced his retirement after the 2025-26 season, concluding a remarkable 33-year tenure leading the program.
