Can Daily Orange Juice Consumption Improve Heart Health? Study Shows Impact on Genes

Drinking a daily glass of 100% orange juice may alter the activity of thousands of genes inside human immune cells, according to research published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. Scientists from the University of São Paulo, North Carolina State University, and the University of California, Davis, found that regular consumption of the beverage influences genetic pathways tied to blood pressure, inflammation, and fat metabolism.

How Orange Juice Influences Gene Activity at a Molecular Level

According to the study, 20 healthy adults drank about two cups, or 500 milliliters, of pure pasteurized orange juice daily for two months. Researchers tracked changes in more than 1,700 genes within the participants’ immune cells. The results showed broad shifts in genetic activity that support cardiovascular health, specifically by promoting lower inflammation and healthier blood vessel function.

Specific genes associated with stress and inflammation—such as NAMPT, IL6, IL1B, and NLRP3—became less active after the 60-day period, according to the study. Another gene called SGK1, which dictates how the kidneys retain sodium, also showed decreased activity. These molecular changes match findings from previous clinical trials indicating that daily orange juice consumption can reduce blood pressure in young adults.

The Role of Citrus Flavonoids and Body Weight Differences

Researchers attribute these shifts to citrus flavonoids, which are natural plant compounds found in oranges, berries, tea, and cocoa that act as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. These bioactive compounds help blood vessels relax and assist the body in handling sugar and cholesterol.

However, the genetic response varied depending on body weight, according to findings reported by Fox News. Normal-weight participants primarily showed shifts in inflammation-related genes, while overweight participants displayed changes tied to fat metabolism and energy use. The study’s authors noted that body weight may influence how individuals respond molecularly to bioactive compounds in orange juice.

Expert Perspectives and Study Limitations

Nicolette Pace, a registered dietitian nutritionist in New York who was not involved with the study, stated that the research supports using plant compounds to promote longevity and reduce disease risk. Pace noted that in normal amounts, the sugar content of pure orange juice does not cancel out its nutritional benefits, though she recommends low to moderate daily consumption.

The research team cautioned that the trial was small and lacked a control beverage, meaning the findings show associations rather than direct proof of cause and effect. Further research is required to determine whether these molecular shifts translate into direct clinical benefits for diverse patient populations.
