Mrs Huxter had received three doses of the Covid vaccine months prior. When she contracted the virus in December 2022, what started as mild symptoms quickly escalated into a severe medical ordeal that upended her life and career.
A Deceptive Start Followed by Rapid Deterioration
Initially, Mrs Huxter experienced minimal symptoms, noting a mild headache and tiredness that only prompted a test because her husband, David, also had a headache.
Four days after testing positive, she returned to work as a youth charity manager because she felt fine. But the recovery was an illusion.
The Collapse of Daily Life and Routine
By February 2023, her condition deteriorated significantly. She required prolonged bed rest and found herself unable to maintain normal daily routines.
Simple tasks, such as taking out the rubbish bins, left her muscles burning with exhaustion. Official estimates indicate that roughly two million people in the UK live with long Covid, facing symptoms that range from extreme tiredness and brain fog to heart palpitations and muscle aches.
Midnight Ambulance Calls and Total Confinement
In June of last year, Mrs Huxter woke up alone at 4:00 AM with a racing heart that failed to subside, leading her to call an ambulance because she was too scared to move in fear of suffering a heart attack.
Imprisoned in the Bedroom
By August 2023, her symptoms worsened to the point where she was entirely bedbound.
She was left able to stand only to reach the toilet, and eating all her meals in bed.
