Munich Named Germany’s Safest City for the 50th Consecutive Year
Munich has once again been recognized as the safest city in Germany, marking the 50th consecutive year it has received this distinction. The announcement, made today, is based on the latest crime statistics released by the Munich Police Department.
About the Munich Police Department
The Polizeipräsidium München, or Munich Police Department, is an integral part of the Bavarian State Police. Established on October 1, 1975, through a reorganization of the city police (Stadtpolizei München), it currently comprises 7,100 officers.
The department’s jurisdiction covers the city of Munich, its districts and portions of Starnberg, specifically Krailling and Stockdorf (which is part of Gauting). Hubertus Andrä has served as the Police Commissioner since July 2013.
Organizational Structure
The Munich Police Headquarters is structured around seven operational bureaus:
- Regional Bureaus: Three bureaus (Central, East, West) oversee 25 police stations, responsible for uniformed patrol and emergency response.
- Traffic Police Bureau: Focuses on traffic enforcement, including speed checks and accident investigation.
- Special Forces Bureau: Manages specialized units like the Spezialeinsatzkommando (police tactical unit).
- Central Services Bureau: Includes Rapid Reaction Companies (Einsatzhundertschaften), the Bomb Squad (responsible for confiscated firearms), the Dog Squad (Hundestaffel), and the Mounted Police (Reiterstaffel).
- Investigation Bureau: Features 10 units (Kriminalfachdezernate) organized by type of offense.
