Nadiya Savchenko: From Ukrainian Pilot to Political Figure

Nadiya Viktorivna Savchenko, born on May 11, 1981, is a Ukrainian politician and former Army aviation pilot. Her career has been marked by service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a controversial capture and trial in Russia, and a subsequent return to Ukrainian politics.

Early Life and Military Career

Savchenko began her military service in 1997. By 2010, she was a first lieutenant serving as an instructor with the 3rd Army Aviation Regiment in Brody, Lviv oblast. During the 2014 War in Donbas, she served as an instructor with the volunteer infantry unit, the Aidar Battalion [1].

Capture and Trial in Russia

In June 2014, Savchenko was captured by pro-Russian forces in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine and subsequently transferred to Russia [1]. Russian authorities accused her of directing artillery fire that resulted in the deaths of two Russian state-television journalists.

In March 2016, a Donetsk City Court in the Rostov Region of Russia found Savchenko guilty of murder and illegally crossing the Russian state border, sentencing her to 22 years in prison [1]. Though, in May 2016, she was pardoned and exchanged for two Russian soldiers held in Donbas [1].

Political Career and Subsequent Legal Issues

Savchenko served as a People’s Deputy of Ukraine for the 8th convocation, beginning in November 2014 and concluding in July 2019 [1]. She ran for re-election in 2019 in single-mandate constituency No. 51, but was unsuccessful, receiving only eight votes [1]. Following her defeat, she publicly burned her campaign materials, stating she no longer felt indebted to anyone [1].

In 2018, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine accused Savchenko of involvement in planning a terrorist attack in Kyiv. She was arrested by the SBU but released from custody in April 2019 by a court decision [1].

Recent Activities

As of recent reports, in May 2021, Savchenko stated she was earning a living through sewing [1]. More recently, in March 2026, Savchenko posted a photo on social media identifying herself as a Major of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, signaling a return to military service.
