Russell Brand trial: Barrister denies comedian is psychopath

Russell Brand Takes the Stand at Southwark Crown Court

Comedian Russell Brand took the stand at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, denying all allegations against him as his criminal trial in London nears its conclusion, The Irish Times reported. Brand (51) is facing seven charges, including three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving six female complainants across a 10-year span from 1999 onward. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Defense Arguments and the 2023 Allegations

During his closing speech earlier in the week, Brand’s barrister, Ian Winter KC, argued that allegations first broadcast in 2023 had “poisoned the wells” of justice. Winter told the jury that media reports from a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary alongside stories in The Times and The Sunday Times prompted women to come forward. Winter questioned why Brand faced only three rape allegations out of the many women he had engaged with sexually. “Living a highly promiscuous life is entirely lawful however morally distasteful you may find it,” Winter said to the jurors.

Winter also stated that the three rape complainants described Brand’s demeanor as “normal” after the alleged incidents. The barrister maintained that such behavior would be impossible if the comedian were guilty, adding that there is no evidence Brand is “some sort of psychopath who rapes people and thinks it’s normal.” Winter asserted that Brand respected when women declined sexual advances and sought approbation and adoration during encounters.

Testimony From the Defendant in London

Called to the stand by his defense counsel as the sole witness for his case, Brand testified that he was unable to secure anyone else to testify on his behalf. “My entire life has been consumed by these allegations,” he told the court. When questioned directly by Winter, Brand repeatedly answered “No” regarding whether he had committed each offense.

Brand acknowledged that his high-profile career, including his 2010 marriage to Katy Perry, brought about staggering fame. “I do recognize I have been a very determined and focused man… With women — of course, which is the subject of my trial — I’ve been persuasive, seductive, begging and flirting, and dedicated a lot of my life to what seems now beyond reckless, philandering and idiocy,” Brand testified. Addressing specific charges, he denied sexually assaulting a sixth complainant who alleged she was forced to give him a workplace massage in 2009. Regarding a fifth accuser who alleged an anal rape in 2009 following consensual vaginal sex, Brand claimed she did not say no or tell him to stop, and asserted that removing his condom was a consensual act.

Prosecution Case and Charge Reductions

Prosecuting the case, Riel Karmy-Jones KC pushed back against the defense’s narrative regarding the media reports. Karmy-Jones rejected the idea that 2023 reporting had a subliminal hold on the minds of six rational women, forcing them to reinvent or recast their experiences. In her opening statement, the prosecutor characterized Brand as a predator who acted ruthlessly and with a voracious desire for sexual contact.

Legal adjustments occurred earlier in the proceedings when Judge Mr Justice Bennathan reduced one of the original seven charges on Tuesday. The judge lowered an indecent assault charge regarding an alleged 2001 incident involving an MTV employee down to attempted indecent assault due to insufficient evidence. All six plaintiffs in the U.K. trial maintain automatic lifelong anonymity.

Trial Timeline and Deliberations

The defense continued its case on Thursday following Brand’s testimony. Jurors at Southwark Crown Court are expected to begin deliberating on a verdict.

“I’m innocent.”
