NBA Europe Collaboration Talks Intensify with EuroLeague
Discussions between the NBA and EuroLeague regarding a potential collaboration in Europe have gained momentum, with the NBA outlining pathways for EuroLeague clubs to join a prospective new European league. The talks, which included representatives from FIBA, took place on Tuesday in Mies, Switzerland, and signal a continued effort to shape the future of basketball in Europe.
NBA Presents Options for EuroLeague Integration
During the meeting, George Aivazoglou, NBA manager director of Europe and Middle East, detailed two avenues for EuroLeague teams to participate in NBA Europe. According to sources, teams can still submit bids to become permanent franchises, despite the original March 31 deadline. Alternatively, EuroLeague teams can qualify for participation through merit-based competition.

Investor Interest Exceeds 120
The NBA has reported significant interest from potential investors, with over 120 prospective investors – including existing basketball and football clubs, investment groups, and individual benefactors – expressing interest in NBA Europe. More than 20 bids have been received from existing clubs, with several originating from undisclosed EuroLeague teams. The NBA anticipates bids will range from $500 million to $1 billion, and early submissions align with this expectation.
Joint Statement Highlights Constructive Dialogue
Representatives from EuroLeague, including CEO Chus Bueno and President Dejan Bodiroga, and FIBA, including Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, were also present at the meeting. Following the discussions, the parties released a joint statement indicating “constructive discussions were held on the future of European basketball and on potential opportunities for collaboration.” This marks the third meeting between the NBA, FIBA, and EuroLeague in the past year.
Future Outlook
The ongoing dialogue suggests a continued commitment from all parties to explore collaborative opportunities. While challenges remain in aligning the interests of different leagues and stakeholders, the NBA’s proactive engagement and the demonstrated investor interest point towards a potential reshaping of the European basketball landscape. Further discussions are expected in the coming weeks to refine the framework for a potential NBA Europe league.
