NBA Jam Announcer Earned Modest Fee for Iconic Lines

NBA Jam remains a highly recognizable basketball video game since its 1990s debut. Though, Tim Kitzrow, the game’s announcer, reports he initially earned only “like $800-and-change” for recording his voice lines.

Kitzrow discussed his career as a sports gaming voice actor in a recent interview with The Escapist. His work extends to NFL Blitz, MLB Slugfest, and themed pinball machines, but he’s best known for his energetic commentary in NBA Jam.

Many gamers fondly recall Kitzrow’s play-by-play calls, but “boomshakalaka” is the most enduring phrase. Kitzrow considers the line a blessed accident, rather than a deliberate creation.

“A fellow programmer just said, ‘Say that!'” Kitzrow explained. “I went, ‘Boomshakalaka!’ and it just stuck.” he didn’t anticipate the phrase’s lasting impact. Kitzrow also noted that he didn’t receive royalties for the line’s use. He’s since benefited from the game’s continued popularity through personal appearances and other opportunities.

Kitzrow continues to work as a voice actor and is currently involved with Mutant Football League. He embraces his legacy as the voice of NBA Jam and enjoys connecting with fans who remember his iconic calls.
