Apixaban Shows Safer Profile Than Rivaroxaban for Venous Thrombosis Treatment

New research published in the New England Journal of Medicine on March 12, 2026, indicates that apixaban (Eliquis) is associated with a lower risk of clinically relevant bleeding compared to rivaroxaban (Xarelto) in patients treated for venous thrombosis. Researchers analyzed data from 2,760 individuals diagnosed with acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism or proximal deep-vein thrombosis across Canada, Australia, and Ireland. Participants were divided into two groups: 1,370 received apixaban, while 1,390 were treated with rivaroxaban. Both medications are direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs).

Over a three-month period, 7.1% of patients taking rivaroxaban experienced clinically relevant bleeding, significantly higher than the 3.3% observed in the apixaban group. Importantly, the study found no significant difference between the two drugs regarding the risk of recurrent blood clots.

Lana A. Castellucci, lead study author and senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital, emphasized the significance of the results, stating, “These results clearly show that apixaban is the safer option for treating venous thrombosis.”
