Netanyahu Directs Israeli Diplomats to Back Argentina on Falklands Dispute
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed Israeli diplomats to join Buenos Aires in calling for direct negotiations over the Falkland Islands and acknowledge Argentina’s historical ties to the territory, according to a report by The Telegraph. The policy shift comes in response to British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband’s decision to impose economic sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Netanyahu aligns with Milei as Trump signals shift
The reported change in position follows close political alignment between Netanyahu and Argentine President Javier Milei. Milei supported Israel during the war and lit a ceremonial torch during Israel’s Independence Day celebrations. While Israel’s move stops short of formally recognizing Buenos Aires’s sovereignty over the archipelago, the diplomatic pivot signals potential friction with London. U.S. President Donald Trump has also signaled that Washington might abandon its neutral stance on the territory and back Argentine control.
At a United Nations debate, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, urged direct talks between Britain and Argentina regarding the future of the islands. Danon stated that Israel recognizes the importance of the issue to the Argentine people and acknowledges diplomatic efforts pursued in accordance with international law. He emphasized that any resolution must account for relevant historical, legal, and human considerations.
Britain and Argentina fought over the islands in 1982
The Falkland Islands comprise a remote South Atlantic archipelago held by Britain since 1833. Argentina claims the territory and refers to the islands as the Malvinas. In 1982, the ruling Argentine military junta launched an invasion to seize the islands in an effort to rally domestic popularity. Then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher dispatched a naval task force to the region, triggering a 74-day war.
The conflict resulted in 907 deaths, including 649 Argentines, 255 Britons, and three islanders. Argentina’s defeat and the resulting humiliation contributed to the collapse of the military junta. Today, the islands support a population of approximately 3,500 residents. In a 2013 referendum, 99.8 percent of participating voters chose to remain under British administration.
