Google’s new anti-scam tool warns the user during the call: testing underway on smartphones.
With the arrival of the new feature Fraud DetectionGoogle aims to make phone calls more secure thanks to artificial intelligence. The system is being tested on Pixel smartphones and promises to intercept fraud attempts in real time, recognizing suspicious conversations even before the user realizes the danger.
Voice models to unmask scams and dangerous calls
The heart of the project is based on linguistic models trained to recognize typical patterns of telephone scams. Google already presented the feature last year during the I/O event, but is now preparing to make it available to the public, at least in the United States, as a public beta for Pixel 6 and later devices.
The operation is simple: during a suspicious call, the phone analyzes the words spoken by the interlocutor in real time. If signs consistent with a scam scheme are detected – such as urgent wire transfer requests, references to hacked bank accounts or veiled threats – a warning appears on the screen indicating the risk of fraud.

The user can decide whether to stop the call or mark the number as safe. It all happens thanks to Gemini Nanothe AI model built into the Pixel 9 series, or via other machine learning systems in previous devices.
Google specifies that no audio is recorded or stored permanently. Voice data is temporarily sent to servers only for the duration of the analysis, after which it is deleted. A choice that seeks to balance security and privacy.
Because the anti-fraud feature changes the relationship with unknown calls
The calls from suspicious numbers have now become a daily phenomenon, with increasingly sophisticated frauds which bypass the common sense and distrust of the average user. Fraudsters use Italian or international numbers, sometimes silent, sometimes simulating the identity of reliable entities, such as banks or service providers.
The main risk is to act instinctively: press a button, provide personal data, follow a link sent by SMS. All behaviors that can have serious consequences. With Fraud DetectionGoogle tries to anticipate the reaction, showing the alarm while the conversation is still ongoing.
To activate the function (currently deactivated by default), just enter the app Telephonetap on Settingsand access the item Fraud detection. Activation allows you to receive alerts during suspicious calls.
The full rollout is expected in the coming months. After the first tests in the United States, global rollout could start by summeraffecting all recent Pixel smartphones. Once live everywhere, the system could push other manufacturers to implement similar functions to protect users from a growing phenomenon.
The goal is make voice calls reliable againreducing anxiety and uncertainty every time the phone rings from an unknown number. A technological and cultural challenge, which aims to change the very way we interact with a simple and everyday gesture such as answering the telephone.
