New Israeli Research Reveals Detailed Genetic Atlas of the Human Liver

Israeli scientists have created the first precise genetic atlas of the healthy human liver, uncovering a far more complex division of labor within the organ than previously understood. The breakthrough, led by researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in collaboration with Sheba Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic, provides unprecedented insight into liver function and vulnerability to disease.

The study, published in the scientific journal Nature, maps the liver at a resolution of 2 microns, revealing that the organ’s functional units—known as lobules—carry out more than 500 processes simultaneously. This detailed genetic profiling shows that the division of functions in the human liver is not only deeper than in other mammals but likewise more extensive than earlier research suggested.

According to the findings, this intricate organization helps explain why certain areas of the liver are particularly susceptible to diseases such as fatty liver disease. The research opens new pathways for understanding how metabolic disorders develop and may inform future targeted therapies.
