New Jersey Devils Hire Sunny Mehta as General Manager
April 16, 2026 — The New Jersey Devils have officially hired Sunny Mehta as their new general manager, the team announced Thursday. Mehta, 48, becomes the sixth general manager in franchise history and returns to the organization after previously serving as director of hockey analytics from 2014 to 2018.
Mehta joins the Devils after six seasons with the Florida Panthers, where he spent the last three years as assistant general manager and head of analytics. During his tenure in Florida, the Panthers won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025.

Mehta, a New Jersey native who grew up watching Devils practices in Totowa, expressed his enthusiasm for the return. “This is a dream arrive true for a New Jersey kid, who grew up watching Devils practices just 20 minutes away in Totowa,” he said. “After meeting with David Blitzer, Josh Harris, Bob Myers, and other members of the organization, I knew this was the place I wanted to be. The Devils fired longtime general manager Tom Fitzgerald late in the 2025-26 season, and Mehta’s hire comes less than 48 hours after the team’s regular season concluded without a playoff appearance. New Jersey possesses a young core of players, a collection of draft picks, and a passionate fan base eager for a return to contention.
Background and Qualifications
Before his stint with the Panthers, Mehta worked in the Washington Capitals organization. His analytical background and player evaluation expertise were cited as key factors in the Devils’ decision-making process. The hire reunites him with several members of the Devils’ front office with whom he previously worked during his first tenure in Newark.
As general manager, Mehta will oversee all hockey operations, including player personnel decisions, draft strategy, free agency moves, and minor league affiliations.
