Bards on the Bay: New Playwrights Center to Open in Wellfleet in 2028

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel, former Huntington Theatre managing director Michael Maso, and philanthropist Grace Nordhoff are launching Bards on the Bay, a new center for playwrights and theatrical composers, in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, set to open in 2028. The initiative aims to address a “perilous time for writing and producing new plays,” according to Vogel, as major development centers like Sundance Theatre Lab and The Lark have closed in recent years.

What is Bards on the Bay?

Bards on the Bay will operate in six Bauhaus-style cottages on a four-acre property known as the Colony, which has served as an artistic hub since 1948. The center will offer residencies, readings, and collaborative opportunities for writers and mentors, with participation selected by an advisory board of theatre leaders. The program emphasizes intergenerational engagement, allowing emerging and established playwrights to “mingle, share ideas, and write the next plays to enrich our stages,” Vogel said.

How Will the Program Operate?

Participants will receive one- to three-week stays, with no obligation to complete a specific project during their residency. The summer program will include spring and fall community events for Wellfleet and the Outer Cape. Rosey Strub, vice president of artistic strategy at Concord Theatricals, will serve as the program’s strategic advisor. Michael Maso, who previously led the Huntington Theatre, highlighted the center’s focus on “year-round community programming,” building on the legacy of artists like Paul Newman and Bernard Malamud who once used the Colony.

Why Is This Initiative Timely?

The project responds to declining support for new plays, with Vogel noting “the elimination of money from theatre budgets” and the closure of key development spaces. Playwright Sarah Ruhl, a mentee of Vogel, called the center “a sanctuary and a beacon” for writers to “dream, collaborate, and write” away from production pressures. The Colony’s design, featuring natural light and Cape Cod Bay views, aligns with its mission to provide a “gorgeous haven” for creativity.

What About the Colony’s History?

The 1948 property, designed by architects Nathaniel Saltonstall and Oliver P. Motion, has hosted artists including Faye Dunaway and the Trilling couple. Vogel, a Wellfleet resident, secured the site after learning it was for sale. The center’s launch in 2028 coincides with broader challenges in theatre, including the 2023 closure of The Lark, a New York-based play development lab. Bards on the Bay’s focus on community engagement and intergenerational exchange sets it apart from other residencies, according to Maso.
