Universal Quantum Expands to Singapore with First R&D Centre Outside Europe

Trapped-ion quantum hardware developer Universal Quantum has announced a major international expansion, establishing its first dedicated research and development competency centre outside of Europe in Singapore. According to announcements from Universal Quantum and the Singapore Economic Development Board, the new facility launches with an initial team of 25 people and an investment of over 30 million Singapore dollars.

The new facility serves as Universal Quantum’s inaugural hub for the Asia-Pacific region. According to the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), the expansion builds on the company’s existing momentum and connects research, talent, and industry development through a long-term presence in the country. The Sussex-based company plans to grow the initial team significantly as operations expand. EDBI, the investment arm of SG Growth Capital—a platform jointly managed by EDB and Enterprise Singapore—has joined as a strategic investor in Universal Quantum, according to company statements.

Semiconductor and Engineering Collaboration

At the center of the Singapore expansion is a program focused on advanced ion trap chip process development and integration. According to Universal Quantum, the work combines the company’s chip design expertise with Singapore’s semiconductor fabrication and packaging capabilities. This partnership aims to build a world-class facility for microchip development that advances progress toward fault-tolerant, scalable trapped-ion quantum computers. According to the EDB, the development of new capabilities in advanced packaging design relies on collaboration with local research institutes to build chip architectures capable of supporting a fully scaled, million-qubit integrated quantum processing unit.

Ecosystem Integration and Strategic Applications

Universal Quantum’s long-term roadmap in Singapore includes exploring fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC), ranging from advanced quantum microchip development to creating FTQC algorithms for strategic local industries. The company intends to explore applications of its technology in sectors such as medicine, materials design, and climate modeling. Dr. Sebastian Weidt, CEO and co-founder of Universal Quantum, stated that Singapore brings together world-class research infrastructure, advanced manufacturing expertise, and a highly collaborative government.
