New Mental Health Hospital Opens for Mothers and Babies
A new specialist mother and baby mental health hospital has opened just in time for Christmas. The £7.5m, single-story building features eight beds and is the first facility of its kind across Cheshire, Merseyside, and North Wales. It will provide compassionate care for pregnant and postnatal women experiencing severe mental illness.
The name ‘Seren Lodge’ was chosen by mothers who’ve experienced maternal mental ill-health.It signifies hope and positivity,and also acknowledges the cross-border partnership with Wales – ‘seren’ means ‘star’ in welsh.
Prof Bev Sapre, Clinical Director for Perinatal Services at Cheshire and Wirral partnership NHS Foundation trust, explained: “Seren Lodge, located in Chester, will support new and expectant mothers in a therapeutic surroundings specifically designed for those experiencing maternal mental health difficulties, like postnatal depression, psychosis, or a relapse of an existing condition.”
approximately one in four women experience mental health problems during pregnancy and for up to 24 months after childbirth.This period can be incredibly vulnerable, and timely, specialist support is crucial.
“While only a small percentage of women require admission to a specialist unit like Seren Lodge, we’re thrilled to offer this care closer to home. We already support thousands of families in the community, and this expands our reach.”
