New Study Reveals Dodo Birds Were Smarter and More Nocturnal Than Thought

A recent zoological study published in a scientific journal reveals that the dodo bird possessed cognitive capabilities comparable to a modern pigeon, challenging centuries of historical stigma framing the extinct bird as exceptionally foolish. Researchers from Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, alongside an international team, utilized high-resolution computed tomography (CT) scans to analyze the brain structure of the flightless bird, finding that its forebrain proportions matched those of its pigeon relatives.

CT Scan Analysis Reveals Pigeon-Like Intelligence

According to Professor Vera Weisbecker of Flinders University, writing in The Conversation, the research team set out to examine the cognitive capacity of the dodo using high-resolution CT scans of three perfectly preserved skulls housed in museums globally. This imaging allowed researchers to digitally reconstruct the cranial shape and measure the relative size of the brain’s distinct regions. The analysis showed that the dodo’s forebrain—the area responsible for cognitive processing and memory—scaled proportionally with the rest of its brain in a manner identical to modern pigeons. Consequently, scientists found no anatomical evidence to support the long-standing characterization of the bird as less intelligent than other columbids.

Adapting to Low-Light Conditions on Mauritius

While the forebrain proportions mirrored those of pigeons, the dodo’s brain structure featured a notable divergence in its optic lobes. Data gathered by the research team indicated that the region responsible for initial visual processing was smaller in the dodo than in smaller-bodied pigeon relatives. Researchers theorize that this ocular adaptation suited low-light environments, allowing the bird to forage effectively during nighttime hours. This nocturnal or crepuscular foraging strategy likely reduced direct competition for food resources with diurnal species on the island of Mauritius, such as giant tortoises.

Extinction and Historical Misconceptions

The dodo went extinct in the late 17th century, roughly several decades after humans arrived on Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Historical accounts from Dutch sailors often described the birds as entirely unafraid of humans, a trusting behavior that made them vulnerable to hunting and predation by introduced species such as dogs, cats, pigs, and rats. According to the study authors, this lack of caution did not stem from low intelligence, but rather from evolutionary isolation on an island devoid of native mammalian predators. Sailors capitalized on this docility, capturing dodos so their distressed vocalizations would attract nearby flock members, cementing an undeserved reputation for ineptitude that endured for centuries.
