Public health officials in england have identified a new combined type of mpox in a person who recently traveled to asia. No information about teh patient or their condition has been released, but tests confirm the virus is a unique mix of the two known types of mpox. Experts are concerned about the potential implications for future spread.

Mpox Virus

Mpox is related to the smallpox virus.Initial symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle aches, and backache. The infection may also cause swollen lymph nodes and exhaustion.Within a few days, a rash or sores can develop, frequently enough starting on the face and spreading to other parts of the body.

The disease spreads through contact with these sores, or fluids from the sores left on surfaces like clothing or bedding. The mpox virus can also transmit through saliva and respiratory secretions (droplets from breathing), meaning it can spread through close contact like kissing.

Types of Mpox

Researchers have identified two currently circulating types of the virus: Clade IIb and Clade Ib.

Clade IIb Mpox

Clade IIb mpox caused the global outbreak in 2022, infecting 114,000 people and resulting in 220 deaths worldwide. In the United States, the outbreak peaked in the summer of 2022 with 11,000 cases each month.

While mpox originates in animals, Clade IIb mpox is known to spread person-to-person. During the 2022 outbreak, transmission occurred primarily through sexual contact among men who have sex with men. clade IIb mpox generally causes milder symptoms.
