NFL Free Agency 2026: Top Movers and Initial Assessments
The first week of the 2026 NFL free agency period has concluded, and initial assessments are emerging. Franchises, coaches, and players are all being evaluated on their early moves. Here’s a look at the top five teams making the biggest impact so far.
1. Carolina Panthers
Despite an 8-9 record in 2025, the Carolina Panthers secured a playoff berth, benefiting from a relatively manageable division. This success is attributed to recent franchise decisions, including the revitalization of Bryce Young’s career under Head Coach Dave Canales and the ongoing defensive rebuild initiated during the 2025 free agency period.
This year, the Panthers focused on bolstering their defense and providing further support for Young. They signed Jaelan Phillips to a four-year, $120 million contract with $80 million guaranteed.1 The Panthers too added Devin Lloyd, who finished the 2025 campaign with 81 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 5 interceptions.1 To address a short-term need at left tackle while Ikem Ekwonu recovers from a torn patellar tendon, they secured Rasheed Walker for one year at $4 million.3
2. Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders, with an $83 million budget, aimed for a deep rebuild, recognizing the need for significant improvements across the squad.3 While they overpaid for some players, Defensive Coordinator Rob Leonard benefited from the arrival of Quay Walker, Nakobe Dean, and Kwity Paye to strengthen the front seven. The Raiders also managed to retain Maxx Crosby after a brief and dramatic off-season saga.3
3. Indianapolis Colts
Daniel Jones emerged as a significant acquisition for the Colts, securing a two-year contract worth $44 million per year, with potential to reach a higher value based on performance.3 Indianapolis also re-signed Alec Pierce, creating a promising duo that will be crucial to the team’s success.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers had a quiet but effective offseason, strategically signing players and making trades. They acquired Michael Pittman Jr. From the Indianapolis Colts and extended his contract for two years at $35 million.3 Rico Dowdle joined the team to compete for a starting role at running back, and Jamel Dean and Jaquan Brisker bolstered the secondary. The Steelers’ primary need remains at quarterback.
5. Interior Offensive Line Market
The interior offensive line experienced a surge in value during the 2026 free agency period. Tyler Linderbaum set a new market standard, signing a three-year, $81 million contract with the Raiders.3 This deal positively impacted the market for other interior linemen, including Zion Johnson, David Edwards, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and Conner McGovern, increasing their negotiating leverage.
