NFL Stars Clash with Team USA in Fanatics Flag Football Classic

LOS ANGELES — The inaugural Fanatics Flag Football Classic is set to capture place on Saturday, March 21, at BMO Stadium, pitting teams of NFL stars against each other and against the reigning IFAF Flag Football World Champion U.S. Men’s National Team. The event, a precursor to flag football’s Olympic debut in Los Angeles in 2028, is sparking debate about the skill gap between professional football players and dedicated flag football athletes.

Coaching and Captaincy

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton will lead the Founders FFC, captained by Tom Brady and Jalen Hurts. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will coach the Wildcats FFC, with Jayden Daniels and Joe Burrow serving as captains. The teams were drafted on Wednesday, March 18, from a pool of 24 current and former NFL stars and athletes.

A Test of Skill Sets

While NFL players bring athleticism and size to the field, the nuances of flag football present a unique challenge. “The skill sets are similar,” event co-promoter Tom Brady said. “The rules are quite a bit different. But really, it will be a great gauge for all these players and the players that will be participating in L.A. 2028 to observe where we’re at and what we require to do in the next few years.”

Team USA’s Dominance

The U.S. Men’s National Team enters the competition as a significant favorite, having not lost an International Federation of American Football (IFAF) tournament since 2018. Their consistent success has led some to question whether NFL stars can truly compete at the highest level of flag football. “They have everything to prove,” former NFL quarterback and event co-commissioner Drew Brees stated. “When it was first announced the 2028 Olympics were going to have five-(on)-five flag football, immediately everybody started talking about Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill…And I’m sure all those (Team USA) guys were, like, ‘Wait a minute, now. We’re the best in the world at what we do, and nobody’s going to come take this from us.’”

Rule Differences and Strategic Adjustments

The game differs significantly from traditional tackle football. Played on a 50×25-yard field with 15-minute halves and a running clock, contact is limited, and actions like flag guarding and blocking are prohibited. The emphasis on flag pulling, a skill requiring precision and agility, presents a challenge for larger NFL players. IFAF officials will enforce the Olympic-style flag rulebook.

The Unexpected Edge for Team USA

Fanatics’ sportsbook has installed Team USA as 6-point favorites against both pro squads. Team USA quarterback Darrell “Housh” Doucette emphasized the importance of a strong performance from the NFL players to accurately showcase the differences between the two styles of football. “We want them to be at their best because we want to show it’s a different game,” Doucette said. “Don’t underestimate the flag guys you don’t know. Don’t just go off the names.”
