Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died, his family announced Friday. He was 54 years old.
According to a family statement posted on Instagram, Brendon died in his sleep of natural causes. “Most people know Nicky for his operate as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years,” the statement read. “In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.”

Brendon publicly struggled with depression and alcoholism for many years, leading to multiple arrests and convictions for charges including destruction of property, vandalism, theft, and domestic violence. He discussed his battles with substance abuse on two appearances on “Dr. Phil” in 2015. In 2022, he was hospitalized for tachycardia, and had undergone two spinal surgeries the prior year.
