Niall Horan Honors Liam Payne with New Song “End of an Era”

Niall Horan is paying tribute to his late One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne, through his upcoming album, “Dinner Party.” The song, titled “End of an Era,” is inspired by their friendship and Payne’s unexpected passing in 2024.

A Song Born from Grief

Horan shared with GQ that the lyrics reflect on the cherished memories he holds of Payne. A poignant excerpt from the song reads, “We had it / Pure magic / Remember what it was like,” followed by, “Time passes / So fast and / I couldn’t advise you goodbye.”

The singer revealed he “went into hiding a little bit” following Payne’s funeral to process his grief. Payne died in 2024 after falling from a balcony in Argentina.

Remembering the Moment

Horan recounted the shock and disbelief he felt upon receiving the news of Payne’s death. “I just remember getting a message,” he told GQ. “I just didn’t think it was real. Someone so young, you’re not expecting to hear that they’ve passed, especially someone that you’ve just seen. I just went back from shock to sadness to anger.”

A Recent Reunion

The two musicians had the opportunity to reconnect just weeks before the tragic incident while Horan was on tour in South America. Horan described the meeting as positive, noting that Payne “seemed in good form and we had a good laugh, good reminisce.”

Cherished Memories

Horan fondly remembers the unique bond they shared, recalling “random nights playing FIFA on the bus” and the early days of forming their friendship during bootcamp for “The X Factor” in 2010. “I just got to know him a little bit and then we ended up doing what we did together,” Horan said. “Memories that only he and I can share ’cause you have a team and you have people around all the time, but we always said that only us have that experience, no one else has that.”
