Niall Williams Releases O Now! Following Acclaimed Faha Novels

Author Niall Williams has released his latest work, O Now!, a short story originally commissioned for BBC Radio that returns to the fictional west County Clare village of Faha, irishtimes.com reported. The narrative opens with elderly neighbors Bat and Ganga sitting in companionable silence in a thatched cottage at the end of October, waiting to see who will die first. The release follows a sequence of celebrated novels set in the same imaginary community, including the 2014 Booker Prize-longlisted History of the Rain, This Is Happiness from 2019, and the 2024 Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year Award winner, Time of the Child.

The Inspiration Behind the Faha Literary Universe

Williams invented the village of Faha on Easter Sunday in 2011 after dinner with his neighbor and friend Martin Keane, to whom O Now! is dedicated. irishtimes.com reported that the author turned to a large Ordnance Survey map of southwest Clare and the Shannon Estuary after feeling spiritually exhausted from writing his previous book, John, which explored the Evangelist’s resurrection of Christ’s story. During a period of reading following his father’s death, Williams was deeply moved by receiving his late father’s books with a handwritten note reading, “To Niall, my books.” This connection inspired History of the Rain, featuring a protagonist named Ruth who learns of Faha from books left by her late father.

Musical Influences and Crafting the West Clare Setting

Living in west Clare since 1985 with his wife, artist Christine Breen, Williams sought to celebrate the community’s generosity, endurance, and humor while avoiding the pitfalls of sentimentality and nostalgia. irishtimes.com reported that he modeled his writing method on winding local roads and traditional Irish music, specifically listening to the music of Martin Hayes and The Gloaming while writing his Faha novels. The couple resides in Kiltumper, Kilmihil, in an extended and modernized four-roomed cottage that originally belonged to Breen’s grandfather, where Williams writes in the conservatory each morning.

Ticket and Publication Details

O Now! is published following Williams’s extensive career in fiction and drama, which includes adapting his 1997 debut novel, Four Letters of Love, into a 2024 film starring Pierce Brosnan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Gabriel Byrne. The author’s creative-writing workshops, formerly held at his Kiltumper home, now take place at the Old Ground Hotel in Ennis, counting authors such as Helen Cullen among their alumni.
