Google NotebookLM Gains AI-Powered Summaries and Customization Options
Google’s AI-powered note-taking tool, NotebookLM, is set to receive several updates aimed at improving organization and user experience. The new features, currently in development, include automatically generated notebook summaries, manual summary options, and customization of notebook appearance with avatars and creator names.
Enhanced Notebook Summaries
Currently, NotebookLM automatically generates a title for each notebook based on its content. While functional, this system can be limiting when dealing with multiple notebooks on similar topics. Google is addressing this by introducing a feature that will automatically generate summaries for notebooks, providing users with more context before opening them.
Users will also have the option to manually write their own summaries, overriding the AI-generated version if desired. The AI-generated summaries will be dynamically refreshed each time the notebook is opened, ensuring they remain relevant to the notebook’s content. Customization Options
Beyond summaries, Google is testing additional customization options for NotebookLM. These include the ability to set an avatar for each notebook, which will be displayed on the notebook cover and homepage, and the option to assign a creator name that appears alongside the avatar. These visual cues will further aid in organization and identification of notebooks.
Availability
While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, the fact that these features have been leaked suggests Google is nearing completion. NotebookLM is designed to analyze sources like links, PDFs, and YouTube videos, extracting insights for academics, and students. The tool aims to streamline research and note-taking processes, offering features like summarizing lecture notes and creating study guides.
