Novo Nordisk applies for Wegovy pill approval and health insurance reimbursement in South Korea

Regulatory Filing Targets South Korea

Novo Nordisk is preparing a second phase for its obesity treatment Wegovy by seeking South Korean regulatory approval for its oral formulation and applying for national health insurance coverage, monews.co.kr reported. The pharmaceutical company submitted an application for 품목허가 (product approval) for oral semaglutide, known as Wegovy Pill, to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in the second half of the year.

The company also submitted an application for 요양급여 결정신청서 (determination of health insurance benefits) to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service on December 12. Currently, injected Wegovy functions as a non-reimbursed drug in South Korea, meaning patients pay the entire cost out of pocket. Novo Nordisk is pushing for reimbursement to improve treatment access for patients diagnosed with severe obesity alongside related health conditions.

Intensifying GLP-1 Market Rivalry

This reimbursement push arrives as competition intensifies within South Korea’s GLP-1 receptor agonist obesity treatment market. Price stability, supply consistency, and treatment accessibility have emerged as the primary variables in the commercial rivalry.

Weighing Daily Pills Against Weekly Injections

Injectable Wegovy requires weekly administration, whereas the Wegovy Pill provides a once-daily oral option based on the same active ingredient, semaglutide. The oral version launched in the United States in January, recording rapid prescription growth.

However, the oral format does not automatically guarantee superior convenience because the medication requires strict adherence to specific dosing conditions, such as taking it on an empty stomach. Real-world prescribing choices will depend on patient lifestyle patterns and treatment persistence alongside raw weight loss efficacy.

Small-Molecule Challengers and Formulations

Competition in the oral obesity drug sector will likely involve Eli Lilly’s candidate orforglipron (파운데요). While both products function as once-daily oral GLP-1 treatments, their underlying chemical structures and specific dosing requirements differ. Wegovy Pill extends the active ingredient of the injectable Wegovy into an oral tablet, whereas orforglipron utilizes a small-molecule compound.

Cost will be key for Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill, says Dr. Patel
