New York, NY – Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with an incident on the Queensboro Bridge where a 16-year-old boy fell 50 feet into a shaft while attempting a TikTok challenge, according to CBS News and NBC New York.

The Incident and Rescue

The incident occurred Monday night when first responders were called to the Queensboro Bridge after receiving reports of a person down a shaft. Firefighters used ropes and harnesses to rescue the teenager, who was pulled to safety just before 11 p.m. He was subsequently transported to a hospital with serious injuries. The New York Post reported that over 70 firefighters and first responders were involved in the rescue operation, utilizing specialized high-angle equipment.

TikTok Challenge and Abandonment

Police sources revealed that the 16-year-old was attempting a TikTok challenge when he fell. He told officers that his friends left him after the fall, and no one was present when responders arrived on the scene. NBC New York reported that a GoFundMe page alleges the teen was “abandoned for hours” and that those with him recorded him while he called for help.

Arrests and Charges

On Friday, police announced the arrests of a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy in connection with the incident. The 14-year-old has been charged with trespassing and reckless endangerment, while the 15-year-old faces a charge of trespassing, according to CBS News.

Teenager’s Condition

The 16-year-old’s father told CBS News New York that his son is recovering and his condition has improved, though he suffered head injuries and is medicated. It remains unclear whether the 16-year-old will face charges.

Rescue Details

The rescue operation was described as “time-consuming and manpower-intensive” by FDNY Deputy Chief Nicholas Corrado, involving high-angle equipment, ropes, and air quality monitoring The New York Post reported. Firefighter Khalid Lee noted the discovery of a shoe and blood at the scene, prompting a swift and coordinated response.
