Mayor Mamdani’s Vision for Tenant Protection

Mayor Mamdani emphasized the importance of listening to tenants directly. “You can’t fight for tenants without listening to them first,” he stated. “That’s why we’re launching Rental Ripoff Hearings in all five boroughs—bringing together renters to speak directly about what they’re facing, from hidden fees to broken tiles and unresponsive landlords.” He assured residents that the testimony gathered will directly influence policy decisions aimed at making the city more affordable.

City Officials Support the Initiative

Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning Leila Bozorg expressed enthusiasm for hearing from New Yorkers about the challenges they face, including hidden fees and code enforcement issues. Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Dina Levy added that the hearings are a serious effort to craft responsive policies and improve enforcement strategies within the city’s housing plan. “Your story can improve lives,” she said.

Focus on Addressing Landlord Issues

The hearings aim to address a range of landlord-related issues, including maintenance problems, pest infestations, and unexpected charges. The initiative seeks to hold landlords accountable and improve living conditions for renters across New York City.

Whereas the hearings focus on privately owned buildings, some have noted the exclusion of tenants in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments. Critics argue that NYCHA tenants, who often face significant housing challenges, should too have a voice in the process.
