Coburg North Home Renovation by Circle Studio: A Celebration of New Beginnings

A recent renovation in Coburg North, Melbourne, has transformed a late 1990s brick veneer unit into a light-filled, vibrant home for a retired couple, Andy and Marg. The project, undertaken by Circle Studio Architects, focused on enhancing the connection to nature and creating a space that reflects a new chapter in their lives after meeting online and deciding to live together.

Addressing the Existing Structure’s Limitations

Prior to the renovation, the two-bedroom unit suffered from inadequate insulation, low ceiling heights, a dark living room, and a less-than-ideal spatial flow. Yvonne Meng, director of Circle Studio Architects, explained the brief was to create a “simple and beautiful home full of light, warmth, colour, texture and natural materials.” The design prioritized improving the existing structure rather than expanding its footprint.

A key element of the redesign involved removing the second bedroom and laundry at the rear of the property. This space was replaced with an open-plan living area that directly overlooks Merri Creek, featuring large timber sliding doors to maximize natural light and views. Yvonne Meng highlighted this transition as a favorite part of the project, noting the feeling of the ceiling lifting and the gaze being drawn outwards towards the creek.

Exposing Original Structure for Spatial Enhancement

Working within the existing building envelope, the renovation team exposed and elevated the ceiling in the living space by revealing the original roof trusses. This clever design choice significantly improved the sense of space within the living room. The renovation focused on refining the existing footprint rather than adding to it, resulting in a more thoughtfully designed home suited to the couple’s daily life.

Artwork and Interior Details

The home features artwork, including “Gold and cotton pearls” by Ben Randall, adding to the overall aesthetic and warmth of the renovated space. The redesign aimed to celebrate a new chapter in Andy and Marg’s lives by opening up and renewing the house, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment.
