New York City Weather Update: Cold Snap Followed by Return to Normal Temperatures
New York City experienced a dramatic temperature drop this week, with a brief return to colder conditions after a period of unseasonably warm weather. Though, temperatures are expected to rebound to near-normal levels this weekend.
Recent Temperature Fluctuations
From Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon, temperatures across the region plummeted by more than 40 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. Most locations saw temperatures ranging between 35 and 39 degrees Fahrenheit. While snow fell, it did not accumulate due to ground and air temperatures remaining above freezing.
Friday’s Forecast
Although the snow has cleared, the cold weather persists on Friday. A light breeze will contribute to a wind chill, making it feel even colder. At dawn, temperatures will be around 32 degrees Fahrenheit, with northwesterly winds gusting up to 20 miles per hour, further lowering the wind chill.
Temperatures are expected to rise above 40 degrees Fahrenheit by lunchtime, but wind chills will remain in the 30s. The afternoon will witness peak temperatures in the mid-40s, with moderate gusts continuing and wind chills remaining in the 30s for many areas.
Weekend Outlook
The good news is that temperatures will begin to rise this weekend, approaching near-normal values of around 50 degrees Fahrenheit on both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is anticipated to be the more pleasant of the two days, with increased sunshine.
Impact on the NYC Half Marathon
Runners participating in the New York City Half Marathon this Sunday should expect temperatures in the 30s Fahrenheit range at the start of the race, gradually rising to the mid-40s around noon. Cloudy conditions are forecast, but rain is not expected, ensuring a dry race.
