Former Battelle Institute in Geneva Added to Heritage Inventory
The buildings of the former Battelle Institute, located on the heights of Carouge, have been included in the Geneva heritage inventory, the Heritage and Sites Office (OPS) announced on March 12, 2026. This decision will guide the methodology for necessary energy renovations of the building envelopes.
A Significant Post-War Architectural Ensemble
The former Battelle Institute constitutes a major architectural and landscape ensemble of post-war Geneva. Developed between 1953 and 1972, the complex comprises several buildings dedicated to scientific research, set within a large, wooded park. The site is located in the Carouge commune.

European Expansion and the Geneva Location
Following World War II, BMI decided to expand its operations into Europe. Geneva was chosen due to its economic dynamism, international influence and thriving scientific environment, which included the creation of the Institute of Physics and the establishment of CERN. In 1952, BMI acquired the Spahlinger estate in Carouge, a nine-hectare domain where the first researchers were stationed.
Architectural Design and Campus Inspiration
Beginning in 1953, architect Georges Addor designed a master plan inspired by the American campus model, organized along an orthogonal grid. Building A was designed as a multi-purpose center, housing laboratories, offices, a library, a cafeteria, and conference rooms.
Recent Developments
