The omnidirectional wheel, often referred to as the ‘omni wheel,’ is rapidly gaining prominence as a crucial component in the burgeoning autonomous robot and future mobility markets. Overcoming the limitations of traditional wheel designs, omni wheels enable free steering even in confined spaces, sparking increased technological competition among tire manufacturers and robotics companies.

How Omni Wheels Work

Omni wheels utilize small rollers arranged vertically around the rim of the main wheel. Unlike conventional wheels restricted to forward and backward motion, omni wheels combine the rotational force of the wheel itself with the rotational force of these rollers. This allows for movement in any direction – forward, backward, left, right and diagonally.

A key advantage of omni wheels is their ability to rotate 360 degrees in place without requiring a separate steering mechanism. This functionality is particularly valuable for robots operating in space-constrained environments like warehouses or complex indoor settings where maximizing efficiency is paramount.

Several companies are actively developing and implementing omni wheel technology. Kumho Tire introduced the ‘Omni Ring,’ a modular tire specifically designed for future mobility systems. The Omni Ring features multiple tread patterns optimized for various driving conditions and purposes.

Kumho Tire’s ‘Omni Ring’ received the main prize at the ‘If Design Award 2026’ in Germany [Hyundai Motor Group]. In urban indoor environments, a comb pattern reduces noise and improves fuel efficiency, while a robust block-shaped pattern enhances high-speed driving performance for inter-city travel.

MobED and HL Robotics: Real-World Applications

Hyundai Motor Group’s MobED (Mobile Eccentric Droid) platform exemplifies a four-wheel-drive implementation of omni wheel technology. MobED utilizes an eccentric structure based on four independently driven DnL mechanisms to optimize responsiveness to varying ground conditions [Hyundai].

HL Robotics is also leveraging omni wheel technology in its autonomous outdoor patrol robot, ‘Goalie.’ The Goalie robot, unveiled at CES 2025, features omni wheels on its rear wheels for cost-effective and efficient in-place rotation. Commercialization of the Goalie robot is underway, with deployments planned for apartment complexes in Daejeon.

Future Outlook

Kwon Kyeong-tae, a researcher at HL Robotics, emphasized the growing importance of omni wheels, stating they are “one of the options for robots exposed to environments that require turning in narrow spaces.” He predicts that “mobility adopting omniwheels will further spread in the future.”
