Ayo Dosunmu Delivers Historic 43-Point Performance in Timberwolves Playoff Win
Former Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu delivered a career-defining performance for the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night, scoring 43 points in a pivotal Game 4 victory over the Denver Nuggets. His output marked the second-highest point total in a playoff game in Timberwolves franchise history and the highest-scoring effort by a reserve in 50 years.
Dosunmu, acquired by Minnesota in a mid-season trade from the Chicago Bulls, was efficient throughout the contest. He made 13 of 17 shot attempts from the field, including a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range, and converted all 12 of his free throw attempts. The performance represented both a career and NBA playoff high for the fifth-year guard.
Stepping into an enlarged role due to leg injuries to starters Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, Dosunmu provided the offensive spark Minnesota needed. DiVincenzo reportedly suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the game, which will sideline him for the remainder of the playoffs, although Edwards’ status remains uncertain moving forward.
The Timberwolves secured a 112-96 victory to take a 3-1 series lead in the first-round matchup, positioning themselves just one win away from advancing to the Western Conference semifinals. Game 5 is scheduled for Monday, April 27, in Denver.
Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch praised Dosunmu’s impact, stating, “He goes places quick. He’s an unbelievable finisher. He makes big shots.” Finch added that he planned to “ride him until he collapsed, really,” highlighting the guard’s relentless aggression and effectiveness.
Dosunmu acknowledged the significance of the moment, saying, “I grasp it sounds cliche, but I can’t and won’t take this moment for granted, because I understand how long and how hard it is to get here.” His performance similarly drew praise from teammates, including Julius Randle, who admitted he had underestimated Dosunmu’s abilities prior to the midseason trade.
While the victory brought optimism to Minnesota, the game concluded with notable ejections. Denver’s Nikola Jokic and Minnesota’s Julius Randle were both ejected following an altercation near the Timberwolves bench with just 2.1 seconds remaining in the contest.
Denver’s Jamal Murray led the Nuggets with 30 points, while Nikola Jokic contributed 24 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists. Denver struggled from beyond the arc, making just 6 of 27 three-point attempts.
The Timberwolves have won the last three games of the series and enter Game 5 with momentum. Nuggets coach David Adelman expressed confidence in his team’s ability to respond, stating, “I really trust our two best players will find a rhythm, and they have to find that at home,” referring to Murray and Jokic.
Dosunmu’s historic effort has already begun to shape the narrative of Minnesota’s playoff run, though he and his teammates recognize that significant challenges remain. As Dosunmu noted after the game, “Postseason legends aren’t made in the opening round. The Wolves still have a long road ahead.”
