Turner High School, which had exceeded 3,000 students. The school opened its doors in the fall of 1975, initially serving eighth and ninth-grade students residing north of Belt Line Road. Over the subsequent years, the grade levels served expanded incrementally: ninth and tenth grades in the second year, eighth through eleventh grades in the third year, and finally eighth through twelfth grades by the fourth year. The first graduating class completed their studies in 1979, having attended four years at the school, while the class of 1980 had attended five years due to the phased implementation. In 1981, eighth-grade classes were transferred to the newly completed North Carrollton Junior High School (now Dan F. Long Middle School), and the school added an auditorium and a second cafeteria to accommodate its growing student body. Newman Smith High School is named in honor of Newman Smith, the former superintendent of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District. The school serves portions of both Carrollton and Dallas. In 2015, the Texas Education Agency rated Newman Smith High School as “Met Standard,” reflecting its compliance with state accountability measures. The school maintains an active student council, which has earned statewide recognition for its initiatives and leadership.
