Opel Astra 2026: A Comprehensive Review of the Updated Model
The modernized Opel Astra receives significant updates for 2026, encompassing design refinements, enhanced technology, and a broadened engine range. This review delves into the changes, performance, and pricing of the latest Astra, examining what sets it apart in the competitive compact car segment.
Design and Exterior Enhancements
The 2026 Opel Astra boasts a stronger, more recognizable design. The most prominent change is the redesigned front end, featuring a slimmer Opel Vizor and a new illuminated Blitz logo, contributing to a more modern aesthetic. Design elements draw inspiration from the Opel Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo, complemented by new wheel options and color choices.
The Astra is available in two body styles: a saloon version measuring 4,374 mm in length, 2,062 mm in width, and with a wheelbase of 2,675 mm, and a Sports Tourer station wagon. The saloon offers up to 1,339 liters of boot space (1,236 and 1,268 liters for the Plug-in Hybrid and electric versions respectively), while the Sports Tourer provides up to 1,634 liters, making it one of the largest in its class.
Interior Comfort and Technology
Inside, the Astra prioritizes comfort and sustainability. The car features seats with recycled and sustainable materials, including a steering wheel covered in leather and textiles made from 100% recycled sources. New Intelli-Seats, designed to reduce pressure on the coccyx, are standard. Higher trim levels (GS or Ultimate) include ergonomically certified seats with six-way electric adjustment and combined leather and fabric upholstery.
An optional, more advanced seat package adds ten-way electric adjustment, memory function, heating, ventilation, and a massage function, upholstered in recycled vegan “suede.” The Astra also incorporates Intelli-Lux HD adaptive headlights, featuring over 50,000 pixels (25,600 per side) to precisely illuminate the road without dazzling oncoming drivers. Opel claims this system allows drivers to detect obstacles 30 to 40 meters earlier at 80 km/h, providing an extra one to two seconds of reaction time.
Powertrain Options and Performance
The Opel Astra continues to offer a diverse range of powertrains, including a fully electric version, a plug-in hybrid, a mild-hybrid, and a diesel engine.
Astra Electric
The electric version now features a slightly larger 58 kWh battery (previously 54 kWh), improving range to 454 km for the hatchback and 445 km for the Sports Tourer. Fast charging at 100 kW can replenish the battery from 20% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. A new Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function allows the car to power external devices.
Plug-in Hybrid
The plug-in hybrid model combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor and a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, producing a total output of 144 kW (196 hp). A larger 17.2 kWh battery (previously 12.4 kWh) extends the electric range to 82-84 km (WLTP).
Mild-Hybrid
The mild-hybrid variant utilizes a 1.2 Turbo engine paired with a 48V lithium-ion battery and a six-speed eDCT transmission, offering improved fuel efficiency.
Diesel
A 1.5 CDTI diesel engine, producing 96 kW (130 hp) and 300 Nm of torque, remains available with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Pricing and Availability
As of March 25, 2026, pricing for the Opel Astra starts at €32,450 for the hybrid version and €39,900 for the electric model. The Astra GS Plug-in Hybrid is priced at €42,050, while the Astra Sports Tourer GS Plug-in Hybrid costs €43,250. The updated Astra is expected to arrive in dealerships in May 2026.
