OpenAI Surpasses 1 Billion Active Users Across Its AI Interfaces

OpenAI surpassed one billion active users across its artificial intelligence interfaces, including ChatGPT, achieving the milestone less than four years after launching its flagship chatbot, according to company statements. Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar announced the threshold during a blog post detailing the company’s pricing strategy, noting that the platform also serves over two million enterprise customers.

User Growth and Enterprise Adoption

According to historical company data, Facebook required six years to reach one billion users after its launch. The figure reported by OpenAI encompasses all of its AI interfaces, spanning ChatGPT, the coding assistant Codex, and the workplace integration platform ChatGPT Work.

User engagement deepens over time as individuals grow more familiar with the technology, according to Friar. Data provided by the company shows that six users out of ten send roughly 50 percent more messages daily six months after registration, applying the tool to a broader range of tasks.

Intense Market Competition

San Francisco-based OpenAI originally planned to clear the one billion user threshold earlier in the year, having reached 900 million weekly active users in late February, according to reports from US media. Intensified competition from rivals such as Anthropic, creator of the Claude chatbot, prompted adjustments to corporate timelines.

OpenAI prioritized enterprise clients late last year to capture higher revenue segments and close a perceived gap with Anthropic, whose primary focus centers on corporate accounts. With more than two million businesses now utilizing its models, OpenAI has narrowed that deficit.

Pricing Pressures and Cost Reductions

The rise of autonomous AI agents capable of executing multi-step tasks has driven up demand for computational power, escalating operating costs for developers and businesses. To manage expenses, many users look toward lower-cost alternatives, including open-weight models originating in China.

OpenAI dépasse le milliard d'utilisateurs actifs

In response to market shifts, OpenAI introduced three versions of its GPT-5.6 model family in July, including a lower-cost option named Luna priced at one-fifth the cost of the top-tier Sol model. Accelerating market pressures led the company to reduce the price of the Luna model by 80 percent, positioning it among the least expensive advanced AI models available.
