Anna Della Rosa Stars in New Production of Virginia Woolf’s ‘Orlando’

Rome, Italy – A new stage adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s seminal novel, Orlando, is set to captivate audiences across Italy this spring. Starring Anna Della Rosa and directed by Andrea De Rosa, the production promises a poetic exploration of identity and gender boundaries, bringing to life Woolf’s groundbreaking work for a contemporary audience.

A Literary and Theatrical Collaboration

The play, which premiered in February 2026, draws not only from Woolf’s 1928 novel but also from the correspondence between Woolf and Vita Sackville-West, specifically their letters compiled in Scrivi sempre a mezzanotte (Donzelli Editore). The dramaturgy, crafted by Fabrizio Sinisi, incorporates Nadia Fusini’s new translation of the novel, adding layers of depth and nuance to the narrative.

Exploring Themes of Identity and Transformation

Orlando follows the extraordinary life of a protagonist who lives for over four centuries and mysteriously transitions from male to female. De Rosa emphasizes the play’s exploration of identity, stating, “Identity is a ghost…Virginia Woolf invites us to travel in space and time, to go beyond that fence that keeps us imprisoned in the trap of identity.” The production aims to challenge conventional notions of gender and societal norms, echoing Woolf’s original intent to celebrate freedom and individuality.

Award-Winning Cast and Creative Team

Anna Della Rosa, the recipient of the 2024 Premio Duse and the Associazione Nazionale Critici di Teatro award, takes on the titular role. The creative team includes Giuseppe Stellato (set design), Pasquale Mari (lighting), G.U.P. Alcaro (sound), and Ilaria Ariemme (costumes). The production also features music from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (“Pathetic”).
