Elmgrove Arena Lease Expiration Threatens Ottawa Gymnastics Centre

The Ottawa Gymnastics Centre faces potential closure by the end of June 2027 after the City of Ottawa designated its longtime home at the Elmgrove Arena as “end-of-life,” cbc.ca reported. Operating out of the Westboro facility since 1992, the gymnasium currently serves more than 2,500 families and provides recreational programs for children across the city.

Amanda Pepin, executive director of the centre, stated that leadership received notification last November that the lease could not be extended past June 2027. Despite the designation, Pepin told cbc.ca that the facility has not yet received an explanation from the city detailing how the “end-of-life” determination was made.

City Officials Schedule New Building Condition Audit

Responding to inquiries from cbc.ca, Dan Chenier, general manager for Ottawa’s recreation, cultural and facility services, stated that the city is currently in discussions with the organization regarding its lease extension request. Chenier noted that municipal officials plan to meet with centre representatives in the coming weeks following an updated building condition audit.

Inspectors are scheduled to begin assessing the condition of the arena facility, according to Pepin. Staff members, some of whom have worked at the gym for two decades, report that the lack of definitive information regarding the site’s structural future has created ongoing uncertainty for daily operations.

Search for Alternative Locations and Facility Requirements

In response to the looming lease expiration, centre staff formed a dedicated task force to evaluate potential alternative locations. However, finding a suitable new home presents distinct logistical challenges due to the specific spatial demands of the sport.

Cate Heggtveit, vice-president of the centre’s board of directors, explained to cbc.ca that gymnastics requires wide-open spaces free of interior support posts that could pose safety hazards to athletes. Heggtveit also noted that the organization recently invested $400,000 in updates and renovations to the Elmgrove Avenue building.

Both Heggtveit and Pepin indicated that while the organization is open to relocating if necessary, leadership prefers to remain in the area where approximately 80 percent of its current members reside.
