Ronald Araujo weighs Liverpool future after summer loan move from Barcelona
Central defender Ronald Araujo has refused to rule out any outcome regarding his long-term future at Liverpool, leaving open the possibility of a permanent transfer to the Premier League club or a return to Barcelona. The Uruguayan international joined Liverpool last summer on a loan deal that includes a reported €55 million purchase option, though Liverpool have not yet decided whether to activate the clause. Speaking to The Times, the former Barcelona captain acknowledged that the ultimate decision does not rest entirely in his hands.
Resurgence under Andoni Iraola in the Premier League
Araujo has made a positive impression since arriving in England, featuring in 11 matches and scoring two goals under manager Andoni Iraola. The regular playing time has allowed the defender to rediscover his confidence and on-field importance after enduring a difficult period during his final months at Camp Nou. That change of environment has benefited his personal well-being significantly, helping him recover from the mental health struggles that previously forced him to step away from the sport. Araujo remains under contract with Barcelona, meaning his next career move depends largely on how Liverpool evaluate the loan arrangement before the current season concludes.
Mental health recovery and return to top form
Reflecting on the anxiety and subsequent depression that led to his temporary break from football, Araujo emphasized the dangers of keeping struggles hidden. He credited taking time away from the game as the essential turning point in his recovery, allowing him to regain his happiness and passion for playing. “Taking this break was the best decision I’ve ever made,” Araujo told The Times. “Today I feel good, I’m happy and I’m rediscovering the joy of playing football.”
