Otters Fearlessly Confront Crocodile in Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

A remarkable encounter unfolded at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve in Singapore on March 22, 2026, as a group of six otters boldly faced off against a crocodile significantly larger in size. The incident, captured in a video posted to the Singapore Wildlife Sightings Facebook group, has garnered attention for the otters’ seemingly fearless behavior.

The Encounter

The video depicts the otters chirping and repeatedly approaching the crocodile, swimming around it while the reptile snapped its jaws in response. Despite the crocodile’s size and defensive displays, the otters deftly evaded each lunge. Eventually, the crocodile retreated into the murky waters, allowing the otters to resume their activities undisturbed.

Witness Accounts

Rovena Chow, a 53-year-classic real estate saleswoman and avid wildlife spotter, witnessed the event around 7:20 am while visiting the reserve. She described herself as “lucky to have captured these valuable moments” after stepping into the reserve. The Straits Times reported her account.

Dan Walsh, a 50-year-old trading systems manager and wildlife photographer, described the showdown as “an incredible encounter to witness,” noting it was “the most active wild encounter” he’s observed involving crocodiles. He observed the crocodile was “clearly defensive, holding its ground with its mouth open as a warning.” ST too reported Walsh’s observations.

Walsh further explained that the otters approached the crocodile cautiously, exhibiting investigative behavior rather than aggression, and maintained a close formation while assessing the threat.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

The Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a significant ecological site in Singapore, boasting the mainland’s largest mangrove forest. It serves as a crucial habitat for migratory birds and is home to over 500 species of tropical flora and fauna, including vulnerable and globally critically endangered species. The National Parks Board provides information and videos of the reserve’s wildlife.

Otter Behavior

The incident highlights the complex interactions between species in the wild. While crocodiles are apex predators, otters are known for their intelligence, agility, and social behavior, which may contribute to their boldness in confronting potential threats.
