Japan Approves Over-the-Counter Sales of Emergency Contraceptive Pill

Japan will begin allowing over-the-counter (OTC) sales of an emergency contraceptive pill on Monday, marking a meaningful shift in access to reproductive healthcare. This change addresses long-standing calls for greater availability of these medications.

Norlevo, manufactured by Daiichi sankyo Healthcare, will be the first emergency contraceptive pill available without a prescription. The suggested retail price is ¥7,480 (approximately $48 USD per tablet).Women can take a single pill within 72 hours of unprotected sex to reduce the risk of pregnancy by roughly 80%.

Previously, emergency contraception in Japan required a doctorS prescription.Advocates emphasized the importance of timely access, as the effectiveness of these pills diminishes rapidly with time following intercourse. The approval for OTC sales aims to remove this barrier and empower women with more control over their reproductive health.

This decision follows extensive debate and consideration of international practices regarding emergency contraception access. Health officials anticipate the change will improve access and reduce unintended pregnancies.
