Ukrainian Forces Shift Strategy After Three Years of Defensive Operations

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have shifted from active resistance and positional attrition to a phase of strategic defense where Russian forces are largely halted, military expert Serhii Hrabskyi reported in an interview with Radio NV, according to Dialog.UA. Ukrainian forces are modifying their front-line tactics to counter decentralized enemy movements and prepare for potential counteroffensive actions.

The current operational phase marks a distinct shift from the tactics used since the autumn of 2023, when Ukrainian units focused primarily on absorbing and exhausting enemy advances.

Drone Ergonomics Versus Decentralized Tactics

As Russian forces abandon large-scale infantry assaults in favor of infiltration by smaller units, Ukrainian operators have adapted their engagement methods. Hrabskyi explained this tactical adaptation through the ergonomics of human-machine interaction, noting that numerical disparities require operators to manage heavier target loads.

Where a single operator previously tracked and engaged a single target within a given timeframe, current engagements require limited personnel to counter significantly larger groups of infiltrating combatants. To address this mismatch, Ukrainian forces have increased the density of drone operators and monitoring equipment along the front lines to detect and eliminate decentralized enemy groups.

Strategic Defense and Future Counteroperations

The stabilization achieved along the front line provides the foundation for longer-term military planning. Hrabskyi noted that three years of sustained strategic defense have culminated in forcing Russian troops onto the defensive, opening the possibility for future Ukrainian counteroffensive actions within the framework of strategic defense.
