Pam Reflects on a Lifelong Divide From Her Older Brother

Pam grew up alongside two brothers, maintaining a close bond with her youngest brother while experiencing persistent friction with her oldest brother from an early age. “We were totally different,” Pam said. “He was an introvert and liked to keep his nose in books, while I was very extroverted and liked to go out.”

That distance became starkly apparent when her youngest brother died in an accident at the age of 21. “He was really my friend,” Pam said. “When he died, I embraced my oldest brother because that feels normal at such a moment. But I thought: I don’t want to embrace you at all because my buddy has passed away.”

Distance Persists Through Adult Years and Relocation

The sibling relationship remained strained into adulthood as Pam traveled extensively and eventually settled abroad with her children, while her older brother chose a more conventional lifestyle. Pam suspects that lingering jealousy from their childhood contributed to the ongoing rift. “He once said to me: ‘You probably think I’m stupid for having such a bourgeois life,’” Pam recalled. “While I didn’t care about that at all. I thought: what is he talking about?”

Pam believes the friction originated in their early years when she joined the family after he had held sole possession of their parents’ attention. “Maybe because he had all the attention first and then a little sister came along,” she said. “I don’t know for sure, of course, but I’ve always had the feeling that he didn’t grant me much.”
