Ireland’s Six Nations Campaign Gains Momentum After England Victory
Ireland’s pursuit of the 2026 Six Nations title has gained significant momentum following a dominant 42-21 victory over England at Twickenham on February 21st. The win, which saw Ireland score five tries, has propelled them into contention for the championship, building on their earlier home win against Italy and recovering from an opening-round defeat to France.
O’Connell Pleased with Tactical Execution
Ireland forwards coach Paul O’Connell expressed his satisfaction with how the team’s pre-match plans materialized during the match. “To see some of the play that came out in the game, to see some of the bits that you’re working on in the training ground come to fruition, was great as well,” O’Connell stated at a media conference as reported by the BBC. He also highlighted the players’ hunger and work ethic throughout the game as particularly satisfying for the coaching staff.
Focus on Continuous Improvement
Despite the emphatic win, O’Connell emphasized the need for continued improvement in the remaining fixtures. “For us it’s just about getting better from the last performance and that’s what the focus is on and the excitement for us as coaches and as players,” he said. He acknowledged that there are “plenty of things we need to improve on” even after such a positive result.
Championship Ambitions
While the team hasn’t explicitly discussed winning the championship, O’Connell confirmed that the ambition is present. “We haven’t discussed trophies or silverware or anything like that, but we might,” he noted, adding that head coach Andy Farrell may address the topic with the team. “You always come into a campaign trying to win it and we don’t shy away from it.”
Aki’s Return Boosts Squad
The return of center Bundee Aki from a four-game suspension is a positive development for Ireland ahead of their match against Wales. O’Connell praised Aki as a “brilliant personality” and highlighted his leadership qualities, stating that it’s “great to have that kind of personality around the group.” The suspension stemmed from an incident involving “verbal abuse and disrespect” towards match officials during a URC match in January.
Upcoming Fixtures
Ireland will next face Wales at home this Friday [20:10 GMT], followed by a final-weekend match against Scotland at the Aviva Stadium on March 14th.
Recent Form
