Paulo Fonseca Signs With Sporting Through June 2030
Sporting formally communicated to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) on Wednesday that the club has appointed Paulo Fonseca as its new head coach on a contract running through June 2030, according to a report by A Bola. The green and whites paid €5 million to Lyon to secure the manager’s release.
The announcement follows the departure of Rui Borges. Alongside Fonseca’s appointment, Sporting outlined the structure of the incoming coaching staff, confirming assistants Paulo Mourão, Nélson Duarte, António Ferreira, Paulo Ferreira, and Rui Faria. Gonçalo Álvaro also attended the manager’s official presentation.
Several members of Rui Borges’s previous staff did not attend the unveiling. Goalkeeper coaches Tiago Ferreira and Hugo Tecelão will move to the club’s B team, which is managed by Tiago Fernandes, who previously took charge of the senior side on an interim basis during a 1-0 victory against Shakhtar in the fourth matchday of the UEFA Champions League. Former central defender Luís Neto is expected to leave the club entirely. Neto had served on the technical staff since Borges took charge in December 2024, following a playing career at Sporting from the 2019/2020 season through 2023/2024 that included two league titles, a League Cup, and a Super Cup.
