Higher Cancer Mortality Rate Detected in Province of Pavia, Italy

Pavia, Italy – A recent analysis of data from the Province of Pavia has revealed a concerning trend: a standardized cancer mortality rate of 8.4 per 10,000 inhabitants, exceeding both the regional rate of 7.2 and the national average of 7.6. The data, initially collected by Istat and Cnl, prompted 31 associations to call for an urgent epidemiological study.

Disparities in Mortality Rates by Gender

The analysis highlights significant differences in cancer mortality rates between men and women within the province. For males, the rate stands at 32.7 per 10,000 inhabitants, notably higher than the regional rate of 30.5 and the national rate of 29.4. Among females, the rate is 19.9 per 10,000, also exceeding regional (19.2) and national (18.4) figures.

Ongoing Epidemiological Updates and Studies

Lorella Cecconami, CEO of ATS Pavia, has informed stakeholders that epidemiological analyses are being updated using the latest data from the tumor registry, specifically information relating to 2022. These updates adhere to established procedures to ensure data quality and reliability. The mortality register will also include a specific in-depth analysis of early mortality rates.

Calls for Further Investigation

Alda La Rosa, president of Sustainable Future in Lomellina, emphasized the importance of the available data for potential epidemiological investigations. She stated that the information could be used to involve other territorial bodies and institutions dealing with environment and health. Doctors for the Environment in Pavia, in agreement with the Order, will support the associations’ request by evaluating resources with relevant bodies.

Seeking Provincial Council Support

Associations are awaiting feedback from the president of the Province, Giovanni Palli, after requesting a provincial council meeting one month prior to discuss the issue.
