PayPal Offers Refund Exception for Cancelled Bluesfest 2026 Ticket Holders
PayPal is providing a pathway to refunds for ticket holders who purchased passes to the now-cancelled Byron Bay Bluesfest 2026 using its platform. The company is temporarily relaxing its standard refund policies following the festival’s abrupt collapse.
Bluesfest Cancellation and Liquidation
The Byron Bay Bluesfest, which had operated for 36 years, announced its cancellation on March 13, 2026, and subsequently entered liquidation . This left an estimated 10,000 ticket holders facing potential financial losses.
PayPal’s One-Time Exception
“In light of Bluesfest’s sudden cancellation, and to support our customers, PayPal is making a one-time exception to its standard buyer protection eligibility window,” a PayPal spokesperson stated . PayPal will consider all eligible claims for Bluesfest 2026 (Byron Bay) tickets purchased using PayPal, even those made more than 180 days prior to the dispute .
PayPal Pay in 4 Claims
Ticket holders who used PayPal’s “Pay in 4” buy now, pay later service are directed to contact PayPal through the platform’s website to file a claim .
Ticket Costs and Financial Impact
A one-day adult ticket to Bluesfest 2026 was priced at $257, with three- and four-day passes costing up to $554 and $686 respectively. Additional costs included camping and car parking . Liquidators Worrells warned creditors that refunds from the liquidation process were unlikely .
Complications with Ticketing and Other Payment Channels
The refund process is complicated by the festival’s ticketing arrangement with Moshtix, which has disclaimed responsibility for refunds, stating that payments were made directly to Bluesfest . PayPal is listed as a creditor owed $1.73 million, although Stripe is owed $3.92 million . Ticket holders who purchased tickets with a credit card may be able to pursue a chargeback through their bank.
