Man Accused in Brothel Owner’s Death Argues Case is ‘Guesswork’

Melbourne, Australia – Michael James Chalmers, 36, is fighting charges of rape and murder in connection with the death of Yuko, a 62-year-ancient woman who ran a brothel in Footscray, Melbourne. Chalmers appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday, March 23, 2026, arguing the prosecution’s case relies on speculation.

Details of the Case

Yuko was found dead at the Rainbow Garden brothel in late November 2024. According to prosecutor Jordan Johnston, CCTV footage shows Chalmers speaking with Yuko for approximately two minutes before allegedly grabbing her in a headlock and pinning her to the bed. Johnston stated, “The interaction commences with violence.”

The footage reportedly captured Chalmers leaving the room around 30 minutes later, with Yuko either unconscious or deceased. Two pathologists have indicated Yuko likely died from strangulation or smothering. The prosecution contends the injuries sustained by Yuko are consistent with rape and the CCTV footage depicts a “quite shocking” act of violence.

Defense Argument

Defense barrister Barnaby Johnston countered that there is no DNA evidence linking Chalmers to the injuries, and Yuko had other clients in the days leading up to her death. Johnston argued, “It is utter guesswork how those injuries occurred,” and requested Magistrate Vincenzo Caltabiano discharge Chalmers of the rape and murder charges.

Investigation and Evidence

Police investigations revealed Yuko had seen 13 clients between November 19 and November 27, 2024, including three in the 24 hours before her death who were not Chalmers, according to Detective Daniel Fallone. CCTV footage from the hallway of the brothel showed Yuko ushering clients into bedrooms for periods ranging from 30 minutes to three hours, with no visibility of what occurred inside the rooms.

The defense also raised questions about a report of an assault on Yuko, claiming her daughter had CCTV footage of someone striking her mother. Detective Fallone stated he was unaware of this report and only had a statement regarding a home invasion.

Court Proceedings and Next Steps

Magistrate Caltabiano adjourned his decision until March 31 to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to commit Chalmers to trial in the Supreme Court on all or some of the charges. The prosecutor acknowledged the case is atypical and circumstantial but maintained it should be decided by a jury.
