Tommy Shelby’s Return: Peaky Blinders Movie and Sequel Series on the Horizon
Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his iconic role as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, a film continuing the saga of the Birmingham gang. Following the film, a sequel series is similarly planned, expanding the Peaky Blinders universe with a fresh generation of Shelbys.
The Story Continues: Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man
The film, written by series creator Steven Knight, picks up several years after the events of the sixth season. Tommy Shelby, previously seeking a peaceful exile, is drawn back into the world of the Peaky Blinders. The story unfolds in 1940, with Tommy facing new challenges and confronting his family’s legacy.
A Father-Son Dynamic
Central to the film’s narrative is the complex relationship between Tommy Shelby and his son, Duke Shelby, played by Barry Keoghan. Duke, now leading the Peaky Blinders in Birmingham, is leading the gang down a dangerous path. Tommy’s return is motivated by a desire to save his son and the gang from the influence of the villainous John Beckett (Tim Roth), who is attempting to manipulate Duke into aiding Germany during the early stages of World War II. Cillian Murphy highlighted the familial core of the story, stating the film ultimately became “about family, about father and son.”
Returning and New Faces
Alongside Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man features returning cast members including Rebecca Ferguson, Sophie Rundle, Stephen Graham, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, Ian Peck, and Jay Lycurgo. Tom Harper, who directed episodes of the original series, directs the film from a script by Steven Knight.
A Sequel Series is in Development
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man isn’t the end of the story. A sequel series is already in development, set in Britain in 1953. Steven Knight will return as a writer and executive producer for the series, which will introduce a new generation of Shelbys. The series has received a two-season order, each consisting of six hourlong episodes. Cillian Murphy will serve as an executive producer, though he will not star in the series.
Release Date
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is scheduled for release on Netflix on March 20, 2026. A release date for the sequel series has not yet been announced.
