Perplexity AI Dumps Ads Amidst Trust Concerns and Investor Skepticism
Perplexity AI, a rising star in the generative AI search landscape, has abandoned plans to incorporate advertising into its platform, citing concerns that ads would erode user trust. This decision comes as other AI companies, including OpenAI and Google, experiment with advertising to monetize their services, and as Perplexity itself faces increasing scrutiny regarding its valuation and long-term viability.
Perplexity’s Shift Away From Advertising
Initially, Perplexity tested sponsored answers displayed beneath chatbot responses in 2024. However, the company began phasing out these ads late last year and has now confirmed it has no further plans to pursue advertising. According to a Perplexity executive, maintaining user trust is paramount. “A user needs to believe this is the best possible answer, to maintain using the product and be willing to pay for it,” they stated. While the ads were labeled and not intended to influence responses, the company recognized the potential for users to question the objectivity of all results.
The Broader Trend: Monetizing AI
Perplexity’s move contrasts with the strategies of other major AI players. OpenAI recently began testing advertising on ChatGPT for non-subscription users, displaying labeled ads below answers. Google has integrated advertising into its AI mode and AI Overviews within traditional search, but has yet to introduce ads into its Gemini chatbot. However, Anthropic has committed to keeping its chatbot, Claude, ad-free.
Investor Doubts and Valuation Concerns
The decision to forgo advertising coincides with growing skepticism from investors. At the Cerebral Valley AI Conference in San Francisco in November 2025, over 300 founders and investors ranked Perplexity as the “most likely to fail” among AI unicorns. This assessment stemmed from concerns about the company’s rapid fundraising and valuation increase – from approximately $14 billion to nearly $50 billion in a short period – sparking fears of an AI bubble. Some investors drew parallels to the dot-com era, suggesting that not all high-growth AI startups will succeed.
Perplexity’s Business Model and Financials
Unlike its competitors, Perplexity does not currently monetize shopping features on its platform. The company primarily generates revenue through subscriptions, offering tiers ranging from $20 to $200 per month, alongside free services. Perplexity reports having over 100 million users and an annualized revenue of approximately $200 million, with a valuation of $18 billion.
Focus on Accuracy and the Future
Perplexity executives emphasize the company’s commitment to providing accurate information. “We are in the accuracy business, and the business is giving the truth, the right answers,” one executive stated. While the possibility of revisiting advertising in the future hasn’t been entirely ruled out, the company believes it is “misaligned with what the users want” and may “never ever need to do ads.”
