Nine Dead, Fifteen Injured in Peruvian Andes Minibus Crash

Nine people have died and at least fifteen others were injured after a minibus carrying tourists crashed in the Peruvian Andes on Sunday, July 26, 2025. The vehicle plunged down a hillside while traveling to Rajuntay mountain, a popular destination for adventure seekers.

According to local firefighters, the minibus was carrying approximately 25 tourists and guides when the accident occurred, approximately 10 miles from the base of Rajuntay mountain. Peru’s Health Ministry confirmed the tragedy, stating that nine people died – seven at the scene and two in hospital – and fifteen were injured.

Rescue and Medical Response

Emergency teams transported the injured to four different hospitals in the region. Firefighters described carrying out an emergency triage upon arrival, classifying victims based on the severity of their injuries and prioritizing evacuation. Some patients were referred to the Hospital of Matucana, while others received treatment at the Casapalca clinic, with support from the National Police of Peru.

Cause of the Crash

An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Local media reports suggest that foggy conditions in the area may have contributed to the crash. The bus reportedly veered off the road and overturned on the highway toward Marcapomacocha.

Rajuntay Mountain and Tourism

Rajuntay is a challenging peak, recommended for hikers with previous trekking experience. Tours to the mountain often depart from Lima on Saturday nights and return on Sunday. The area is known for its breathtaking scenery and attracts adventure tourists.

It was not the first fatal bus accident in Peru in 2025. another bus fell into a river on January 3, leaving six people dead and 32 injured according to the Associated Press. A study by the Attorney General’s Office found that driver recklessness and excessive speed are the main causes of accidents in Peru as reported by AP News.

In 2024, approximately 3,173 people died in traffic accidents in Peru according to official data from the Death Information System.
